Evening[]

Davie Adams has dinner with her pregnant teen daughter, Imogen Adams, in their quaint home in Millwood, Pennsylvania. What begins as a normal evening turns peculiar when Karen Beasley unexpectedly arrives. Karen gives Davie a letter that was left out front, which is addressed to DAVIE. Davie opens the letter to find a flyer for the rave that occurred 20 years prior, to her utter shock. Imogen notices her mother’s discomfort, but Davie brushes it off and tells the girls to head upstairs. As they leave, Davie flips the flyer and reads the message.

“GONE BUT NOT FORGOTTEN. YOU CAN’T IGNORE THE PAST FOREVER. THE COUNTDOWN IS ON.”

Davie flashes back to that night.

Imogen and Karen argue in her bedroom before Karen angrily tries to leave. The hallway is wet, and they follow the trail to the bathroom, as Imogen calls out for her mother, who doesn't respond. She pushes the door open, taking in what’s in front of her: Davie, dead in a tub overflowing with bloody water, the letter “A” drawn in red ichor on the wall. Karen screams in horror as Imogen gasps.

Aftermath[]

By September 28th, Imogen moves into the Haworthe house under the guardianship of Sidney Haworthe, the mother of her best friend, Tabby. Imogen and Tabby learn that their moms were friends in high school, a fact neither of them previously knew. The Adams house is now for sale by Sidney, who is a successful real estate agent. Imogen, Tabby, and three other girls at Millwood High School receive anonymous text messages from a masked assailant. The group is framed for individual infractions against Karen Beasley, Millwood High's resident mean girl.[1] This sets off a chain of events which results in Karen's death, disciplinary action for The Little Liars, and the reunion of Davie's old friend group.[2]

On a Tuesday, the mothers gather at the Adams house, where Corey sarcastically starts the table talk with no one will win the mother of the year award. Marjorie jokes the situation is dire if the great Corey Bryant comes back to town. Elodie remarks that being in Davie’s house feels wrong, and it is too big of a coincidence their daughters are all involved. Corey is unsurprised as the town and school are small, but agrees they need to support their children through the disciplinary meeting.

That same day, Imogen sweet-talks the librarian into handing the Class of 2000 yearbook, the year her mother graduated. Imogen finds her mother’s yearbook photo, but offhandedly notices “Y2K Survivors Club” on several students’ pages. Imogen falls into an investigative rabbit hole, successfully finding the location of the rave where a troubled teen girl named Angela Waters killed herself. Imogen initially goes there alone but returns with Tabby to set up a camera to catch A. When she returns, Sidney Haworthe is also there. She explains what happened to Angela that night and how she had a tragic past. Imogen shows the flyer her mother receives and asks if she felt guilty about Angela, though Sidney reveals her mother was the kindest to that lost soul. Sidney assures Imogen that she can ask her former circle if they sent the flyer.

By Friday, the mothers dine together at Pinball Pizza, happy to accept community service or detention as the school's verdict for punishment. They look at their daughters’ table, calling them good girls while remarking they're sitting at their old booth. Sidney reveals to the women that Imogen said Davie received a flyer of the party in the mail, and that the girls know about Angela. They are shocked, but Sidney assures them she told what everyone assumes to be the truth. The women are once again alleviated but wonder who sent Davie the flyer. Corey believes the incident to be a one-time thing. Over at the teens table, Imogen can't shake the thought that everything is connected - her mother's apparent suicide because of overwhelming guilt and Sidney visiting Angela's grave out of guilt. They all wonder what their mother's aren't telling them.[3]

Trivia[]

  • There was much debate if Davie was murdered or committed suicide, as Imogen believed her mother wouldn't leave her alone or subject her to finding Davie's body. However, Principal Clanton debunked Imogen's theory that Davie was murdered.
