SYTYCD fans beg for ‘old show’ as they slam ‘terrible & insane’ format change’ (2024)

SO You Think You Can Dance has finally returned to TV and fans are not liking the new show.

The competition series is following a documentary-style format instead of what it has done in the past as well as other changes.

SYTYCD did not air in 2023, so fans were very excited when it returned on March 4.

However, the competition show dropped many bombshells on viewers and created a lot of changes.

The first major change is that there are no live episodes, which results in America not voting for their favorite contestants to win.

They only held two rounds of auditions and are already at the Top 10, four episodes in.

SYTYCD was also not on the air for the past two weeks.

Fans are torn on the new judges - alums Alison Holker and Common Fedoke, Dancing with the Stars' Maksim Chmerkovskiy, and Jojo Siwa.

Jojo, 20, replaced Nigel Lythgoe, after he was accused of sexual assault by multiple women.

Cat Deeley returned as host and has been for 17 seasons.

But, there is one aspect that fans really don't like - the new documentary-style format.

UP CLOSE AND PERSONAL

Instead of having SYTYCD be primarily about dance, Fox is now focusing on the contestants' personal lives.

No more small package before a performance to tell the viewers about a dancer's background.

Now, cameras are following them around to document more of their journey.

And the contestants are all living together in a house during filming.

A press release stated that fans will get a behind-the-scenes look at their “daily struggles, new relationships, personality clashes and more."

The show wants to give fans the "the authentic experience of building a successful career in dance."

'TERRIBLE'

However, SYTYCD fans are not liking most of the changes and expressed their disappointment on social media.

"Wow…#sytycd is so horrible this year! The judges are so uninteresting. @DANCEonFOX what happened?" one X, formerly Twitter user, wrote.

"Super confused at the format of #SYTYCD this year. Not doing the series of choreography so they can see everyone in every style BEFORE they eliminate is insane. They’re supposed to see who is the best overall Dancer. It seems like this is just a Jazz/contemporary competition," wrote another.

"This years #sytycd is terrible. From the rushed auditions (only 2 rounds), to how they gave them results This year feels more like a scripted reality show and no more about the love of dance. So disappointed," a third added.

"This is the absolute worst season of #SYTYCD. The whole production is really amateur. Budget cuts? Not sure why Comfort was on the judging panel. @MaksimC is too full of himself. Don't care for the new format & w/JoJo Siwa returning won't be watching anymore," slammed another fan.

Maksim Chmerkovskiy- Season 18 (current judge)

Instagram user also slammed the show in the comments.

"Why on earth have you changed the way this was done previously?" one wrote.

"I miss the old format. It’s like a speed show. The dancing is incredible but none on the dancers had a real opportunity to impress. It feels rushed. I like the judges but it’s like the season is cut in half to the prior seasons," said another.

"Gosh. I miss the old format," one fan simply said.

"What were the producers thinking with this new format?! totally ruined what once was the gold standard of dance show competitions!" one last fan wrote.

THINK AGAIN

Fans are also not liking the addition of Jojo to the dance show.

Many have said that they won't watch when the Dance Moms alum returns to the table.

In a quick clip released by SYTYCD, they revealed that Jojo will be a judge once again.

And fans were not liking it.

"I’m not watching. And JoJo is a HELL NO," one fan said.

"I’d rather y'all just cancel the show instead of continuing to change it for the worse."

"She can't even dance, what is she doing judging the show??" said another.
