Aunt Lou here.

I love baked beans, so at any church pitch-in, I bring baked beans. While I usually rely on a can of good ol’ Bush’s Baked Beans(who did not sponsor this post btw, I just love ’em), I was super excited to try and make these Old Fashioned Crock Pot Baked Beans from scratch. Who knew it would be so easy?!

Old Fashioned Crock Pot Baked Beans Notes:

  • I actually made this recipe twice. The first time I made them, I was worried because the beans were not covered in water the entire cooking time. So, I added more. Do. Not. Do. This. It really messed them up. Soooo, I made them again without my worry-wart ways. 🙂
  • I just got a new toy! So, I decided to try it out on this recipe. “What is this new toy?” you ask…it is non other than a Hamilton Beach Multi-Quart Right Size Slow Cooker! You see, I was needing a new smaller slow cooker, but I wanted a programmable one. They are a little more than I was wanting to spend, however, I found this multi-quart bad boy! Not only was it cheaper, it is made so I can use it as a 2-quart, 4-quart or 6-quart all with on crock! How cool is that?! I used it on the 4-quart setting for these Old Fashioned Crock Pot Baked Beans, and it worked like a dream!

Can’t wait to make these! A couple of questions- If I double the recipe, will it fit in a 7 quart crockpot? I want to add bacon. Should I cook it first and add it with the beans at the start?

I haven’t tried doubling this recipe or adding bacon, but think it might fit in a 7 quart. I think if I added bacon, I would cook it first and add it with the beans. If you give it a try, let me know how it goes!

Soak your dried beans overnight. In the morning drain your beans and transfer to your crockpot. Add the ingredients accordingly and this will cut the cooking time in half.

This is so similar to my own recipe, the only difference is I use three types of dried beans, the ones you mentioned, pinto & kidney…..oh and I add bacon 🙂

I put mine on high and they were done in about 5 hours! I also did mot have the onion I thought I had, so I used dried chopped onion. It worked well. They are loke the beans my mother and grandmother used to make! Exactly what I was looking for.

This sounds so good! One question though…what does it mean by “sorted” after rinsing the beans? I’m a newbie when it comes to making anything with dried beans.

      Hi Laura!

They are delicious! Look through your beans for any split, broken or shriveled beans. You can pull those out and just keep the whole ones. Enjoy!

Where I come from you go through the beans prior to soaking to find and dispose of any rocks that occasionally find their way in a bag of dried beans.

I forgot to tell you to drain the beans in a colander first…then add the other ingredients!
