Despite not being as popular as Naruto, Boruto: Naruto Next Generations has a dedicated fan base that’s blessed with an ongoing season. Now with more than 270 episodes, the anime is currently chronicling the Kawaki and Himawari Academy arc, which sees the Himawari Uzumaki finally join the ninja academy.
Boruto’s fans have a lot of things to say about the show, with some being positive while others are more critical. On Reddit, those who follow Boruto have some unpopular opinions that they need to get off their chest.
Konohamaru Is Not Fit To Be A Kage
In a lot of ways, Konohamaru mirrors his mentor Naruto. Apart from being a descendant of a former Hokage, Konohamaru is also a hardworking ninja who has trained his hardest and even learned how to do the Rasengan, an A-rank jutsu that Naruto’s most known for.

He also dreams of being the Hidden Leaf Villages’ Kage, just like his Naruto when he was little. However, Redditor Annual_Blacksmith22 believes that “Konohamaru is not Kage material and will never be Hokage”. But if Konohamaru gets to master the Sage Mode and learn all the basic nature types, he might just prove his detractors wrong.
Boruto’s Anger Against Naruto Is Justified
It’s acknowledged within the fandom that Naruto is not a perfect father. He’s absent for most of Boruto and Himawari’s life as he devoted most of his time being Konoha’s Kage. However, there are many fans who try to reason that Boruto should feel grateful that his father is at least alive, unlike his father who grew up an orphan.
But in a comment, Reddit user Annual_Blacksmith22 says that “Boruto’s anger against him was fully justified” and that being an absent father does not “take away or ruin Naruto’s characterization”. Naruto's fatal flaw proves that character development does not stop at attaining one’s dreams. Thankfully, he has a chance to make it up to his kids in Boruto.
The Time Travel Arc Is Good
Both Boruto and Naruto are known for some exceptional arcs, but Boruto’s time travel arc has received a lot of flack from its fanbase. Apart from immediately squashing any theories that may suggest that there’s a multiverse that exists in the Boruto universe, there’s also the confusing power scaling that suggests Jiraiya is the most powerful ninja.
In a Reddit thread about unpopular Boruto opinions, mathrsar says that the time travel arc is redeemable as it fleshed out the “relationship between Boruto and Sasuke”, which has confused most viewers at the time. Besides thinking that Sasuke is cooler than his dad, Boruto might have also developed an unlikely bond with Sasuke as both have seemingly negligent fathers, which has been further explored during the time travel arc.
Sarada And Boruto Are Not A Good Ship
There are a lot of good pairings in the universe of Naruto, but fans often ship Sarada Uchiha and Boruto due to their fathers being rivals and good friends. The two also have developed a close relationship as they’re both in Team 7, along with Mitsuki. However, there are a few fans who feel differently about the pairing.
Reddit user klayser_Soze notes that Boruto is not a “good match” with Sarada, apart from being a “great teammate”. Their unpopular opinion is most likely based on the fact that he’s more powerful than regular humans as 82% of Momoshiki Otsutsuki is within him. The Redditor further adds that hopefully, Boruto meets an Otsotsuki “princess” down the line who might be able to match his personality and power.
Sarada Is An Uninteresting Character
One of the most powerful characters in the series in Sarada. Of course, it only makes sense for Sarada to be an extremely skillful ninja, as her parents are some of the most prolific ninjas of their generations. Sarada is also well-liked by the fans, as she largely reminds them of her mother, Sakura Haruno.
However, Toboggantic argues that Sarada is an uninteresting character, due in part to the show’s writers. They add that “Sarada is the blandest character” they’ve seen in the show, and unlike her mother, she has “no place” in the overall story of the show. Hopefully, Boruto’s writers save Sarada from turning into an uninteresting character in the show’s future arcs.
Deepa Is A Generic Villain

The Boruto anime took a lot of liberties from the manga, which includes creating anime-exclusive villains. Deepa, an inner from the organization Kara, is a terrifying villain to face on the battlefield. Apart from his heavily damaging projectiles, incredible speed, and impenetrable body, Deepa is also revealed to have an insatiable thirst to taste everything, even if that includes other people.

However, Kellsishere argues that while they “liked him in the beginning”, Deepa turned into the “most generic villain”, with no insightful backstory to support his narrative. While there’s a lot to be desired with how Deepa was written, his moves and powers were interesting enough to keep the viewers’ eyes peeled on screen.
Sumire Is Better Than Sarada

Most of the show's fans are deeply rooting for Sarada to succeed since she’s one of the few living Uchihas who are blessed with the Sharingan. But Sumire Kakei, a Shinobi in Boruto’s class and the vessel of Nue, has also garnered a lot of fans for her interesting backstory and driven personality.
Boruto is often shipped with the two, but Current_Ladder_8954 notes that “Sumire is better than Sarada as a character”. Their opinion might be rooted in the fact that Sarada does not carry the traits that made her parents legends in the Shinobi world as she’s brash and reckless. However, Sarada is more powerful than Sumire, thanks to her Sharingan.
The Jugo Arc Is Mediocre
In Naruto: Shippuden, Jugo is a Naruto character who deserved a lot of screen time. A key part of Sasuke’s mission to hunt Itachi, Jugo is an extremely talented and loyal individual who has the power to transform a part of his body into various forms.
He appears again in Boruto, but this time, he’s being targeted by a group of researchers who want to turn his abilities into a devastating weapon. On Reddit, Dragon6105 says that they weren’t “feeling the anime canon arcs” and thought they were neither good nor bad but just “meh”. However, many fans disagree, as the arc humanizes Jugo as a character and gives him depth.
The Byakuya Gang Arc Is Enjoyable
The Byakuya Gang is comparable to Robin Hood in the sense that they target the rich and steal their goods, only to sell them and give the profits to those who are underprivileged. That’s why despite their notoriety, many villagers in the Land of Fire praise their efforts and consider them noble.

The Byakuya Gang arc has received plenty of criticism from the show’s loyal fans, saying that it’s a direct copy of Robin Hood’s tale. But Redditor schmegm argues that the arc is pretty good as it gave them “a very realistic look” into the modern-day problems of those living in the shinobi world. Overall, the Byakuya Gang Arc shouldn’t be missed by fans, as it introduces new characters and tools that are pivotal to the show’s story.
It Lacks The Charm Of The Original Series
While many fans appreciate more content, the Boruto series is not held in high regard compared to the original series or Naruto: Shippuden. This is due in large to the overall feeling that the main characters in Boruto are already strong, which doesn’t allow much for character and power development down the line.
Redditor anarchbutterflies further explains that while they “love the show”, they think it “lacks the same atmosphere as the original series”. Without having to nitpick the story, the show could elevate the “sound effects and music”, which can then build up action-heavy scenes in the show. By mimicking the charm and atmosphere of its predecessor, Boruto might have a chance at being a worthy legacy to the anime series that have millions of fans around the world.
